Wool, Washing, Materials

Wool washing

When the label on the ball of wool indicates a washing precaution, it is important to respect it.

As for “delicate” wools: silk, alpaca, wool, mohair…
Hand washing remains the best way to wash these materials, however, if you have a washing machine with a fully programmable "hand wash" cycle (20° and no spin), you can test the wash by machine.

The wool cycle or the delicate cold cycle are not necessarily suitable, it all depends on your machine, it is up to everyone to judge according to their experience.
Use a detergent for delicate fibers preferably.

To wash alone the 1st time because there is a risk that it rubs off.

And don't forget to dry the garment flat… especially if you washed it by hand; the absence of spin would tend to stretch or deform it.

Tip: a capful of hair conditioner in the rinse water will make your woollens silkier!

Materials guide

ACRYLIC: Synthetic fiber offering excellent resistance to sunlight and chemicals. Imitating wool, acrylic is soft, warm and voluminous.

ALPACA: From the name of the mammal, close to the llama. Very high-end fiber, softer, warmer, more resistant than sheep's wool.

ANGORA: Fiber taken from a domesticated rabbit for this purpose. Belonging to the “noble hair” category, angora is so fine that it must be mixed with other fibers to avoid falling out of clothes. Very soft and warm hair due to its finesse, the angora has a fluffy appearance.

CASHMERE: Goat down from Mongolia and the Himalayas. Of incomparable finesse, this fiber is light, soft and warm, properties that place it in the “noble hair” category and make it one of the most expensive fibers on the market.

WOOL: Natural animal fibre, which offers good protection against the cold, and whose absorption capacity offers comfort without feeling damp in the event of perspiration. Its softness depends on the fineness of the fibre, therefore on the animal from which it comes. Lambswool is the softest, along with merino wool. Mixed with synthetic fibers such as polyester, acrylic or nylon, it gains in ease of maintenance and durability, provided it remains the majority fiber.

MERINO WOOL: The finest wool, from a breed of sheep developed in Spain from the 14th century.

VIRGIN WOOL: Wool that comes from live, healthy lambs or sheep. As opposed to dead wool, or slaughtered wool.

LAMBSWOOL: Universal name for sheep's wool.

FLAX: Vegetable fiber used for millennia. The fibers of the plant are pulled out, combed and then spun. Stiffer than cotton, linen is also smoother. It is very cool to wear, with a great absorbent capacity, which makes it the ideal material for summer clothing. Can be mixed with cotton, for a less wrinkled appearance.

LUREX: Manufactured metallic fiber. It is used to produce a metallic effect.

MICROFIBER: Very fine, manufactured fibers allowing the composition of fine, flexible and compact fabrics.

MOHAIR: Hair of the "noble" category, from the angora goat. Long and slightly glossy, it allows the manufacture of a thick and foamy woolen fabric, which does not felt easily. This wool combines thermal insulation (cold and warm!) and very light weight.
The KID MOHAIR or BABY MOHAIR is the hair coming from the 1st shearing of the kids, hence its great softness.

NYLON or POLYAMIDE: Fiber composed of synthetic polymers; it is flexible and very resistant.

POLYESTER: Synthetic manufactured fiber. Used mixed with other fibers (wool, cotton, viscose and Modal), it is insulating, absorbent, easy to maintain, and has the best heat resistance of all synthetic fibres.

SILK: A natural fiber of animal origin, silk comes from the cocoons of worm larvae. In the chrysalis state, it secretes protective filaments which, once unwound, can be spun. Wild, the silk is irregular and its filaments are visible. Cultured silk offers a supple and lustrous touch, an unusual fineness and elasticity. Both varieties protect against both cold and heat. Although frequently used pure, silk can be mixed with all the fibers used in clothing. Delicate maintenance.

TENCEL: Viscose material based on Lyosel, a wood pulp. Of natural origin, this new fiber is strong, absorbent and comfortable.

VISCOSE: Natural raw material to which a chemical process has been applied. Viscose is a soft, comfortable and very absorbent fiber.
